‘Diego’s New America’ by Evelyn Sanchez-Toledo is a picture book that students enjoy about multicultural families

diego “Diego’s New America” (La nueva America de Diego) by Evelyn Sanchez-Toledo is a charming picture book about Diego, a curious and intelligent boy who loves to ask questions. When the students need to do a project for an International Fair the school is producing, students are told to pick a country to present at the fair. All of Diego’s friends decide to pick countries that their families are from. One student’s family is from Austria, another’s from Greece.

Diego goes home and asks his family about where they are from. And his question becomes complicated when the answers he gets from different family members confuse him. One grandmother is from Italy, and she makes delicious meatballs. His other grandmother is from Puerto Rico, and a grandfather is from Peru. Another grandfather is from Chicago, but his parents were from Hungary.

Being a curious child, Diego researches the different countries, and the reader learns a bit about each country, too. For example, Diego (and readers) learn that Machu Picchu, the ancient home of the Incas, is in Peru, and that potatoes come from Peru.

Perhaps the biggest surprise about “Diego’s New America” is that kids really love to read it! Although it’s a picture book, fourth graders enjoyed it a lot. One student wrote, “Me gustó porque aprendí nuevas comidas” (I liked it because I learned new foods.) They also enjoyed hearing about the different cultures.
