Killed on Clear the Shelter Day; they wouldn’t even give him a chance

pickelhead

Today was “Clear the Shelters” day when dogs across the nation got adopted for free. The idea was to empty the shelter and get dogs and cats into good homes. But for this dog, a county shelter in Tampa, Florida make sure that wouldn’t happen.

This was written by a volunteer:

“This is Pickle. His owners left him at the shelter June 11. He’s only one year old. He was so shy when he got there, then learned to greet people as they passed him by. A beautiful boy.

Today Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center decided to kill him. Only him. I don’t think his kennel was needed. They had 29 adoptions of dogs today, only 17 new dogs came in. They said the Community Deemed him Unadoptable. CDU. Because no one came for him. The last photo was from yesterday. It breaks my heart again tonight. I wonder who or why they decided he couldn’t have a chance tomorrow, so many more people come on the weekends.”

So why would the shelter kill just one dog when there were empty cages? No one knows and the folks at Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center don’t respond well to questions.

Pickles was a handsome dog.  He was opening up to people and he was young. He deserved more of a chance to find a family and live a long, happy life. What he didn’t deserve was to have his life ended, unnecessarily, when there were empty kennels. He could have been given a chance.

Their lobby is beautiful, but it camouflages the misery in which the dogs must live without any cooling or sufficient fans in their kennels. Please contact the Board of Commissioners if you live in Hillsborough County and demand changes. Demand that competent management be installed. Demand that there be an adoption application. Demand that the “Do Not Adopt” list be kept updated and checked before allowing people to adopt. Demand that rabies certificates be carefully kept track of. Demand that spay and neuter programs become an important part of the shelter’s job.

There needs to be more accountability in this county. The residents need to demand it.

  1. this needs to be brought to the attention of the moayor, governor, and state reps, senators on up. this is the kind of bull shit we fight all around this country and are winning.. it is time to get rid of the heartless killer in that shelter. fire the ass hole because we the animal activist will make sure charges are pressed for the nelect and abuse of these Animale and the living conditions they are enduring.. prosecure this mfer now… expose who made this decision and make them pay Z

    • Fire the person that gave the order It was unnecessary and inappropriate. Call the media and have the name exposed in the local news stories and papers. This is totally unacceptable.

    • People like you should be brought to justice. Animals do not have a voice and if you think what you are doing is right you are so wrong!! They were put on this earth before you and I and deserve better than that. How would you like it if some one did this to you. SHAME ON YOU. The law needs to change. NOW. RIP sweet baby

    • They had him since June 11. One more day would have hurt and might have given him a chance to be adopted. Someone should be held accountable this sounds like it was personnel. Didn’t need the space, not aggressive and the only one killed.what other reason could there be

  2. This is sad RIP pickles and to his former owners who just dropped him off there like garbage to die .. Look at that face he didn’t deserve that … 😔😔😔😔

  3. This is so shameful….so cruel and heartless…so unnecessary. …so sad. God bless Pickles….and all the other precious souls who are treated like “things” to be disposed of. Shame on you Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center. …shame on you!

  4. Sounds ignorant but maybe the same should be done to them. Today I choose that their lives are not worth them breathing and taking up space!! Hope they all pay the price!!!! There needs to be justice for this dog!!

    • I agree – I think that the people who work in these places actually hate animals…(who else would want to MURDER perfectly healthy beautiful animals?) Who the hell can wake up everyday and do that job? Last time I made a comment like that I was ripped a new A-hole…they need their paycheck, like that’s the only job they can get? Executioner? I’m sure the people who perform these dastardly deeds NEVER tell anyone what they do for a living- I’ve sure never met anyone….who would admit it? They could actually be your neighbor. I sure would not want to associate with someone who has the capability to MURDER animals on a daily basis, it’s disgusting. Let’s not forget the beautiful cats that they also MURDER The only people who really care about these poor animals are the people who volunteer and network for these sweet dumped animals. I wish crappy lives on all these people. Hope Insta Karma gets ’em.

  5. #### you Tampa. I hope your administration meets the same fate. Down to the city and county council who sign off on this. #### you and your mansions.

  6. That is absolutely ridiculous. These shelters are supposed to help these animals. Not needlessly kill them. What is wrong with these people? How evil can they be?

  7. It really breaks my heart, very young and have more years to come but ended the life with out any hesitation. Give always a chance.

  8. This is so wrong!! The people who didn’t give this baby a chance needs to be charged and fired!! Every dogs deserves a chance at a great loving home!!

  9. I think all shelters should be no kill what a shame that beautiful sweet boy was even given the chance to get a loving home shame on them I also think there should be some way for them to monitor shelters to many animals are left to live in filth with no AC no fan nothing to pay on but cold cement and some are treated badly in shelters I also think ppl who work in shelters should be checked to see if they have a record for animal abuse or child abuse all animals deserve to be treated with respect and love even if they are in s cage open up your hearts an minds an feel the pain these animals are feeling bring just left off at that scary place wondering what they did that their worthless person left them there to begin with put yourself in their minds they are scared an confused an deserve the chance to live a wonderful life . Sorry for the rant but to many sweet animals are being killed because they supposedly aren’t adoptable all animals are adoptable it just takes that one person who sees the possibility in that animal.

  10. Horrifying!!! The whole idea is to constantly reach out to fosters/rescues/the community…. No animal should die because people think he is un-adoptable…. It’s like giving up on a person who is bipolar… Schizophrenic…Manic Depressive… There’s help everywhere.. What we need are advocates specifically for kill shelters. Who will provide free evaluations & make more use out of social media to stop the random killing… This place needs to be put in the spotlight so everyone knows that they didn’t even consider a pass on such a triumphant day this darkens the purpose… Write letters. Make calls. This barbaric ritual of killing animals because of no space needs to stop … More free neuter programs. … Free adoptions… Volunteers … Let’s give all of these animals a chance just as someone would do for any person ❤️

  11. we as a nation must move to the No Kill movement. To call them shelters while they just kill these animals makes us no different than China or Asia or those countries that we Americans rail against.
There ARE more people looking for animals to adopt than are in the shelters per the Humane Society of America. Let’s stop this cruelty and demand our shelter be no kill shelters !!!

    • No-Kill is very controversial. The name itself is a misnomer. It doesn’t mean that no animals get killed. It means that 90% of adoptable animals leave the shelter alive. That could be as cats spayed and then dumped on the streets or dogs adopted to anyone — even dog fighters. And if a dog is adopted and returned to the shelter 5 times, and then killed on the 5th time at the shelter — that is considered an 80% success rate. Also, and perhaps even more concerning, is that dogs who are sick or aggressive and killed do NOT county toward those numbers. So many open access shelters simply kill those they can label aggressive (usually pit bulls and other large dogs) and those with upper respiratory infections so those deaths don’t count toward the numbers. A shelter could literally label 50% of its dogs aggressive and kill them and say they had a 100% live release rate. The sad truth is that no open-access county shelter can take and keep hundreds of dogs and cats without killing when space is needed. No one has unlimited space. Even Best Friends Animal Sanctuary doesn’t accept animals once their limit is reached. Overpopulation is the problem and can only be addressed by strong spay and neuter programs. There are those who will condemn me for this truth — but it is what I strongly believe as do others who actually work with the county shelters.

      • Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but yes dogs deemed aggressive and animals with medical conditions are counted. Also, animals deemed fearful are counted. However, we might be talking apples and oranges here. There is a Live Release Rate and a Save Rate. Our Shelter’s numbers are figured on the Save Rate. However, we have the same problem. We don’t know who is labeling these animals. We have been fighting tooth and nail for NO KILL to be implemented since 2011. Not going to happen. All we can hope for now is a robust Spay and Neuter program for low income families. TNR for the cat population. Enforcing back yard breeders. Stopping pet stores from selling puppy mills animals. Stop the cause of our over population. More adoption events.

      • No, aggressive and sick dogs who are killed are not counted as deaths under no-kill. Here is a quote from Winograd’s website: Since the No Kill philosophy does not mandate that truly vicious dogs and irremediably ill/injured animals be adopted, it is consistent with public health and safety
What constitutes “aggressive” and irremediably sick is up to the shelters…

  12. when people give that order its crazy,he should have been given a chance. Fans and everything dont cost much so no excuse. fire them all and start over. people are also to blame this country needs to do something.

  13. How do I help get justice for this poor pickles, all animals on this earth have a right to be heard, have a right to live a life of happiness!!!

    • If you live in the area, start studying on the nokilladvocacycenter.org website. Get educated about Nathan Winograd’s No Kill movement. Watch his documentary “Redemption” at least twice to retain the info. Read the documents on the site, they teach you how to go about approaching the government offices, and city council who make the changes that are needed. Go to Austin Pets Alive webpage and watch videos by Ryan Clinton, the lawyer who brought No Kill to Austin. You don’t have to be a lawyer to do any of this. Start sharing posts from the No Kill center and see who reposts them and has a grounded style of commenting. Friend them and ask them to meet after you get 4 or 5 people. You can add people after that, but you’ll find people ask to get together once you Share posts they believe in. Then see if you can get one of the city council members to back a study of your shelter. If not, hold a protest. Contact local newspapers and TV to cover your protest. Then go to city Hall and and complain at the speaker’s table. You might get a council member interested. Look at everyone’s FB pictures to see if they have animals, they will be easier to convince. That’s about where we are right now, and we’ve only been together 2 months. It takes time, but when you have a group, you can lean on each other!!

  14. HEARTLESS MONSTERS!!! HAVEN’T QUIT THINKING OF THIS LITTLE BABY SINCE IT WAS POSTED A FEW DAYS AGO, OUR FUR BABIES ARE OUR CHILDREN OUR LIFE!! BROKE MY HEART TO SEE THAT SWEET LITTLE FACE AND THAT HE WASN’T GIVEN A CHANCE!!
